Why am I unable to select checkboxes on a list views?

Context

The reason for this is that you may have access to edit individual records, but not to mass-edit them. If this is the case, you will see a little prohibition sign next to your mouse cursor.

If you can select the checkboxes but receive an error message when you click on 'Mass edit', this means that you have access to mass edit, but not to update a record. Both are required.
